How to Print and Assemble Your PDF Sewing Pattern at Home
PDF patterns are a game-changer for sewists — instant access, easy to store, and no shipping delay. But if you're printing one for the first time, you might wonder how to get everything aligned correctly.
Don’t worry — here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you print and assemble your Romspattern™ files perfectly from home!
🖨️ 1. Select the Right File Format
Romspattern™ patterns come in:
- A4 / US Letter (for home printing)
- Large Format (for copy-shops like FedEx/Kinko’s)
Make sure you choose the one that fits your printer setup. Most home users choose A4 or US Letter.
📏 2. Print a Test Page First
Always print only the first page and check the test square (usually labeled 5x5cm or 2x2 inches).
Make sure to:
- Set scale to “Actual Size” or “100%”
- Disable “Fit to Page” in your printer settings
If the test square prints correctly, you’re good to go!
✂️ 3. Trim the Margins
Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut the outer borders (usually on two sides of each page).
Follow the alignment guide on the pattern — often labeled with row and column numbers or matching symbols.
🩹 4. Tape It Together (Row by Row)
Lay your pages out horizontally first (row by row), tape them edge-to-edge, then move to the next row.
Use transparent tape for a smooth surface.
💡 Pro Tip: Tape only at corners and intersections — it saves tape and keeps the paper flexible.
✏️ 5. Cut Your Size and Start Sewing
Once taped, you can either:
- Cut the pattern directly, OR
- Trace your size onto tracing paper and keep the master sheet
Highlight your chosen size if the pattern includes multiple sizes.
💬 Final Tips
- Store your printed patterns in labeled envelopes or roll them in pattern tubes
- Take notes on alterations and store with the printout
- Reuse the digital file anytime — you have lifetime access with Romspattern™
📦 Bonus: Printing at a Copy Shop
Want to save time? Take the large format file to a print shop and ask for actual size black & white print on A0 or 36" paper. Easy!
